Tagua Jewelry

Artisans in the tropics use a variety of sustainable materials, like seeds, cocoa wood, thorns, gourds, leaves, and vegetable ivory. One of the most popular is vegetable ivory, also called Tagua, which is the seed of thorny palms that grow in the humid, tropical lowland forests of South America. Its fruit is utilized most often to carve beautiful figures of animals, religious symbols, chess pieces and jewelry. It is easily dyed with vegetable coloring to produce striking, vibrant hues.
